How to Use Quizpio

Quizpio turns your WordPress site into a live, multiplayer quiz game. You build a quiz with the block editor, players join from any device with a PIN and a nickname, and everyone plays together in real time on a shared leaderboard — the kind of fast-paced game you’ve seen at conferences and classrooms, running entirely on the site you already own. Any question can also be a poll, so opinion checks and icebreakers sit right alongside scored questions. No apps, no third-party service.

Getting started

Install from your dashboard (recommended)

  1. Go to Plugins → Add New and search for “Quizpio”.
  2. Click Install Now, then Activate.

Or install manually

  1. Go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the Quizpio .zip, click Install Now, then Activate; or
  2. Via FTP, extract the quizpio folder into /wp-content/plugins/ and activate it from the Plugins page.

After activating, you’ll find a Quizpio menu in your admin sidebar. It contains everything you need: a Dashboard, your Quizzes, Sessions history, a Players list, and Settings. There’s nothing you have to configure before creating your first quiz — the defaults are sensible out of the box.

You’ll also see a Quizpio Pro page in that menu, describing the optional paid add-on. It’s one page you can ignore — nothing else in the plugin mentions it, and it disappears from the menu entirely once Quizpio Pro is installed and active.

Building a quiz

Each quiz is a normal piece of WordPress content with its own page and URL, so you manage quizzes much like Posts or Pages.

  1. Go to Quizpio → Add New Quiz.
  2. Give the quiz a title at the top.
  3. The editor opens with a Quizpio Quiz block already in place, containing one Quizpio Question block to get you started.
  4. Fill in the first question, then add more questions with the + Add question button inside the quiz block. (The quiz block only accepts question blocks, so you can’t accidentally drop the wrong thing inside it.)
  5. Publish when you’re done.

To run the quiz, click View on the quiz (from the Quizzes list or the editor) to open its page — that page is where you’ll host the live session.

The editor checks your work before you publish. If a question is missing something — no question text, fewer than two options, two options that read the same, or no correct answer marked — the editor flags it and lists what’s missing inline. Drafts always save, so you can leave a quiz half-finished and come back to it; only publishing waits until every question is complete.

Two block-editor concepts to keep straight:

  • The Quizpio Quiz block is the container. Its settings (in the editor sidebar when the quiz block is selected) control how the whole quiz behaves — scoring, reveals, and pacing. See Quiz settings.
  • Each Quizpio Question block is one question. Its settings control that single question — its type, time limit, and points.

Question types and polls

Select a Quizpio Question block to see its settings in the sidebar.

Question type offers two options:

  • Multiple choice — up to four answer options (two is the minimum); mark one as correct.
  • True / False — a statement with two options; mark the correct one. The True and False labels are ordinary text fields, so you can rename them and run true/false questions in any language.

Switching a question’s type resets its answers, so choose the type before writing the options.

For each question you also set:

  • Time limit (seconds) — how long players have to answer.
  • Max points — how many points a correct answer is worth, from 100 to 2000.
  • The answer options themselves, with one marked Correct.

Making a question a poll

Turn on Poll — no points in that question’s settings. A poll has no points and no correct answer: nobody’s score changes, the Max points slider disappears, the “Mark correct” buttons vanish from the options, and the editor stops asking you to nominate a right answer. Instead of a verdict, the reveal screen shows how the room voted, and players see the question tagged as a Poll on their own screen so they always know an answer isn’t being scored.

Polls take two to four choices, and you can mix them freely with scored questions — an opinion check between two trivia rounds, an icebreaker to open a training session, a temperature-read partway through a lesson.

Make every question a poll and Quizpio becomes a live survey. The finish changes to match: no podium, no scores, no leaderboard — just a thank-you screen with the number of questions, participants, and responses, and reveals that report how the room voted rather than who was right. The host’s side-panel switches from a leaderboard to a simple participant list, and the summary reports a response rate instead of an accuracy figure.

Quiz settings

Select the Quizpio Quiz block (the container) to find these in the sidebar. They apply to the entire quiz.

  • Scoring style. Speed bonus (the default) rewards faster correct answers, scaling each correct answer between 50% and 100% of the question’s max points. Flat gives every correct answer the full point value regardless of speed — the right choice for assessments, where being quick shouldn’t earn more than being right.
  • Reveal answers between questions. When on, a reveal screen appears after each question for a few seconds before the next one. On a scored question it shows the correct answer and how many players chose each option; on a poll — which has no correct answer — it shows how the room voted instead. Turn it off to move straight from one question to the next.
  • Show full standings to players. When on, players see the complete leaderboard on the Final Results screen. When off, they see the top 10 plus their own rank — better for assessments or large groups where individual standings should stay private.
  • Require host to click Next between questions. By default the quiz advances on its own. Turn this on to switch to manual pacing — the quiz waits for you to advance it, which is ideal for classroom discussion or a debrief between questions. In this mode the timer becomes advisory rather than enforced: the question stays open until you move on.

Embedding a quiz in a page or post

If you’d rather run the quiz from inside an existing page or post than at its own URL:

  1. Edit the page or post where you want the quiz.
  2. Add a Quizpio Quiz Embed block.
  3. Pick the quiz you want from the dropdown.
  4. Publish.

The quiz now plays at that location. Only one Quizpio Quiz Embed block is supported per page or post, but you can embed different quizzes on different pages. Sessions always belong to the quiz itself, so results from an embedded play roll up into that quiz’s history alongside every other session — wherever it was played.

Hosting a live session

Open the quiz’s page (its own URL, or the post where you embedded it). You’ll see the host controls.

  1. Launch the session. Click Launch Session. Quizpio creates a session and shows you a PIN.
  2. Share the PIN. Read it out, put it on the projector, or share the join link. As players join, you’ll see them appear while the screen shows Waiting for players….
  3. Start the quiz. When everyone’s in, click Start Quiz at the top. A short “Get ready!” countdown appears on the host screen and every player’s screen at once, so the room arrives at the first question together rather than in dribs and drabs.
  4. Run it. While a question is live you can Skip to Reveal (or Skip to Next when reveals are off) to move ahead before the timer ends. Use Pause and Resume to hold the room, and a paused quiz shows players a clear “⏸ Quiz paused by host” banner.
  5. Watch the leaderboard. A live leaderboard updates as answers come in. On wide screens it sits beside the question; on phones it stacks below. You can toggle it with ⊞ Show LB / ⊟ Hide LB. (In an all-poll session this panel becomes a simple participant list, since there are no scores to rank.)
  6. Move between questions. If you turned on Require host to click Next, the quiz waits for you between questions; otherwise it advances automatically. Each reveal screen shows the correct answer, the vote count per option, and the standings going into the next question.
  7. Finish. When you reach the end (or whenever you choose), use End Quiz / End & Show Results to close the session and show everyone the final results. You’ll be asked to confirm before the quiz ends.

The host view survives a page refresh, so an accidental reload won’t drop your session.

The player experience

Players don’t need an app or an account (unless you require one — see Guests vs. logged-in players). On any device — phone, tablet, or laptop:

  1. Visit the quiz page and look for Join the live quiz.
  2. Enter the Quiz PIN and a nickname, then tap Join Quiz. (Logged-in users have their nickname prefilled from their WordPress profile.)
  3. Each player gets a color avatar generated from their nickname, so they have a consistent visual identity that recurs across sessions.

Once a question appears, players tap their answer, then see Submitted. Waiting… until the question ends. Poll questions are tagged as polls on the player’s own screen, so nobody wonders why their score didn’t move. The leaderboard always shows a player’s own row — even when they’re outside the top — marked with a YOU badge, so everyone can see where they stand.

Leaving. A Leave option appears on every question and reveal screen. After a confirmation (“Leave quiz? You won’t be able to rejoin this session.”), the player exits cleanly without disrupting anyone else. Any points they’ve already earned stay on the leaderboard, but they can’t rejoin that same session. Players still waiting in the lobby leave fully — their entry is simply removed.

Refreshing and reconnecting. A player who refreshes the page, loses connection, or closes the tab can come back and pick up where they left off. Their identity is kept in the browser for up to 6 hours, or until that session ends — whichever comes first.

Final results

When the host ends the quiz, everyone sees the Final Results screen:

  • A podium with medal cards for the top three finishers.
  • Summary stats for the session.
  • The full standings, if you enabled Show full standings to players (otherwise players see the top 10 plus their own rank).
  • A per-question recap showing accuracy across the quiz.
  • A “Held on” byline with the date, time, and duration — for example, May 17, 2026 · 2:30 PM · 12 min — shown in each viewer’s own local time.

Top-three finishers get a celebratory confetti burst on their own screen, and the host’s results screen celebrates too. (All motion respects the visitor’s reduced-motion preference — see Accessibility.)

If every question was a poll, the finish is survey-style instead: a thank-you screen with the number of questions, participants, and responses, plus the “Held on” byline — no podium, no scores, and no standings, because there was nothing to score.

From the results screen, players can choose Play another quiz, and the host can Start a new session or download the results as a CSV with ⬇ Download CSV. Logged-in players also get a My past plays button to review their history.

Guests vs. logged-in players

Quizpio works for anonymous guests and logged-in members alike, and you choose which you allow.

Guests play with just a nickname — no account, no friction. This is the default.

Logged-in WordPress users get a richer experience:

  • Their nickname prefills from their profile.
  • A My past plays button (on the join and Final Results screens) opens a personal history of every session they’ve played on your site.
  • They appear in the Players admin page, so you can see who’s been playing across sessions.

Both kinds of player play the same quiz. To require accounts and turn off anonymous play, switch off Allow Guest Players in Quizpio → Settings.

Multiple quiz authors

Running a site where more than one person makes quizzes — a few teachers sharing a school site, or several colleagues each hosting their own sessions? Assign the Quizpio Quiz Author role from Users in your WordPress admin, the same way you’d assign any other role.

A Quiz Author can create, edit, and host their own quizzes from the Quizpio dashboard. What they can’t do is see anyone else’s: each author sees only the sessions they ran, the results those sessions produced, and CSV exports of their own plays, and can delete only their own session records. Administrators continue to see everything across the site.

There’s nothing to configure beyond assigning the role — no permissions screen, no per-quiz sharing settings.

Settings

Find these under Quizpio → Settings.

  • Background Refresh Interval (seconds). How often players’ browsers check for updates. Lower feels more responsive but asks more of your server; higher is gentler but can feel laggy. A good rule of thumb is to keep the interval around one-third of your shortest question’s time limit.
  • Reveal Pause (seconds). How long the reveal screen between questions stays up.
  • Allow Guest Players. On by default — visitors join with just a nickname. Switch off to require players to be logged in.
  • When Quizpio Is Deleted. Choose what happens if the plugin is ever removed: delete everything (the default), or keep your quizzes, results, and settings on the site so a future reinstall picks up where you left off.
  • Data & Cleanup. Quizpio never deletes anything on its own. When you want to clear space you can delete sessions in a date range — set a start date, an end date, or both — or delete all session data (you’ll be asked to type DELETE to confirm). Either way, only the play history is removed — your quizzes are never deleted.
  • Compatibility & Server Check. An Open Diagnostics link at the bottom of the Settings page opens the Compatibility page, which inspects your server and hosting setup and flags anything worth knowing. It isn’t a menu item of its own — Settings is the way in.

The Settings page confirms with a “Settings saved.” message when your changes are stored.

Sessions and reporting

Dashboard (Quizpio → Dashboard) gives you an at-a-glance view with overall stats, a callout for any active session with a one-click way to open the host view, and a list of recent sessions.

Sessions (Quizpio → Sessions) is the full history. You can filter by quiz and page through past sessions. Open any session to see its detail: the final leaderboard plus a per-question breakdown showing how the room answered each question. Administrators can also force-end a session from here, which is the way to clear a lobby or game that was abandoned without being ended properly.

Exporting results. From a session’s detail page — or the ⬇ button next to an ended session — you can export a CSV. Each row covers one player’s answer to one question and includes: nickname, rank, score, question number, question text, the option they selected, the correct answer, whether they were correct, points awarded, and their response time in milliseconds. The file is named from the quiz and the session date, so downloads stay easy to sort.

Players (Quizpio → Players) lists your registered (logged-in) players with sessions played, best score, and when they last played, and lets you click through to an individual player’s history. This page covers logged-in users; anonymous guests aren’t tracked here by design.

Accessibility

Quizpio is built to be usable by everyone:

  • The whole quiz interface is keyboard-navigable, with ARIA roles and live regions so screen readers announce each change of phase (a new question, a reveal, the final results).
  • Keyboard focus follows the game — it moves to each new question as it appears, and dialogs keep focus inside until they’re dismissed, so nobody using a keyboard or screen reader loses their place mid-round.
  • Counts and their labels agree in every language. A finish screen with one question reads “1 Question”, not “1 Questions”, and each language applies its own plural rules rather than English’s.
  • The interface carries its own styling rather than inheriting from your theme, so it behaves consistently on every site and renders in your device’s native system font — type that looks at home on Mac, Windows, or Android.
  • All motion, including the end-of-quiz confetti, respects the visitor’s reduced-motion setting. If someone’s system asks for less motion, Quizpio honors it.

Hosting, caching, and performance

How many players can join? There’s no fixed limit — it scales with your hosting. Because each player’s browser polls your server for updates, the real ceiling is how many of those requests your host can serve. On entry-level shared hosting, Quizpio comfortably runs classroom-sized rooms of 50–100 players; a stronger host handles more.

No special infrastructure. Quizpio runs on standard WordPress — no Node.js, no WebSocket server, no external service.

Cache plugins. Quizpio is built to work alongside page-cache plugins (WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, LiteSpeed Cache, and others). It sends no-store headers on its live endpoints, declares the page non-cacheable during a session, and adds a cache-busting parameter on every update check — which covers nearly every real-world setup. The Compatibility page — the Open Diagnostics link at the bottom of Quizpio → Settings — checks your site and flags anything worth knowing.

If players ever appear stuck on a stale screen, add /wp-json/quizpio/* to your cache plugin’s list of URLs to exclude as a final safeguard.

Troubleshooting

  • Players can’t join with the PIN. Make sure you’ve clicked Launch Session (the PIN only exists once a session is launched) and that players are entering the current session’s PIN. PINs are specific to a session — a PIN from an earlier session won’t work.
  • Someone is stuck on an old screen. This is almost always page caching. Open the Compatibility page from Quizpio → Settings, and if needed exclude /wp-json/quizpio/* in your cache plugin.
  • Updates feel slow or laggy. Lower the Background Refresh Interval in Settings, keeping it around one-third of your shortest question time. If your host is under heavy load, a slightly higher interval trades a little responsiveness for stability.
  • A session was left running and won’t clear. An administrator can force-end any session from its detail page under Quizpio → Sessions. Use this when a host closed their laptop mid-game and the lobby is still showing as active.
  • A player left and wants back in. A player who left (via the Leave button) can’t rejoin that same session — that’s intended. A player who merely refreshed or lost connection can rejoin automatically within the 6-hour window. To bring a departed player back, start a new session.
  • “Please sign in to join this quiz.” Anonymous play is turned off. Either sign in, or have the site owner enable Allow Guest Players in Settings.
  • Something looks wrong right after updating Quizpio. If the plugin was updated while a session was actually running, the host and players should refresh their pages once. Everything reconnects normally afterward.

Translating Quizpio

Quizpio is translation-ready and ships with a quizpio.pot file in its languages/ folder. Use a tool like Poedit or Loco Translate to create a translation, and place the resulting .po/.mo files in wp-content/languages/plugins/. True/False labels are ordinary editable text on each question, so those you simply type in your own language as you write the quiz.

One extra step for the live quiz screens. Some of that text is drawn by JavaScript rather than PHP — the counted labels in particular (“1 Question”, “3 Questions”), so that every language can apply its own plural rules instead of English’s. WordPress loads those strings from .json files rather than .mo, generated with wp i18n make-json.

Translating on translate.wordpress.org handles this for you. Translating locally, it’s the step that’s easy to miss — and the symptom is a handful of labels staying in English while everything else translates correctly.

Uninstalling and your data

Quizpio keeps your data under your control. It never deletes sessions automatically — clearing play history is always something you choose to do in Settings.

What happens when the plugin is deleted is your choice too, set under When Quizpio Is Deleted in Settings. By default Quizpio removes everything it created — its database tables and its options — leaving your site tidy. Switch that setting to keep everything instead, and your quizzes, results, and settings stay in place for a future reinstall. Worth deciding before you uninstall: once the data is gone, it’s gone.

Quizpio Pro — optional add-on

Documentation for the paid add-on: a scannable lobby QR code with a full-screen join mode, AI quiz generation with an external AI chat mode, certificates, question and answer images, double points, streak bonus, leaderboard rank animation, branding, licensing and updates. Everything above applies to Pro too — this section only covers what Pro adds.

Installing Quizpio Pro

Quizpio Pro needs the free Quizpio plugin, version 1.1.0 or later. Pro activates cleanly on its own, but stays dormant until Quizpio is installed, active, and up to date — and it tells you exactly what’s missing rather than failing quietly.

  1. Download the Quizpio Pro .zip from your purchase confirmation.
  2. Go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the file, click Install Now, then Activate.
  3. A short setup wizard opens. Where your permissions allow, it can install, activate, or update the free Quizpio plugin for you; where they don’t, it gives you a plain manual path instead.
  4. Add your license key under Quizpio → License — see Licensing and updates.

You can run the wizard again at any time from the link at the bottom of Quizpio → Pro Settings.

Licensing and updates

Your license key has its own screen: Quizpio → License.

Activating your key

  1. Find your key in your purchase confirmation email. It’s also in your Polar customer portal if you need it again later.
  2. Paste it into License key and click Activate License.

Once activated, the screen shows the status, how many sites your plan covers, when the license renews or expires, and which site this activation belongs to. Check Again re-checks the key without changing anything — useful just after renewing.

Until a valid key is added, the License menu item is marked in red and both Pro screens carry a notice. The notice clears itself the moment a valid key is activated; there’s nothing to dismiss.

Moving Pro to another site

Use Deactivate This Site on the License screen. That frees the activation slot so the same key can be used elsewhere — and it does not cancel your subscription. Do this before deleting the plugin if you’re relocating the license, since deleting doesn’t release the slot for you.

Updates

With a license activated, Quizpio Pro updates through WordPress’s normal update flow. A new version appears on your Plugins page and installs exactly like any other plugin — there’s no zip to download by hand and nothing to re-upload.

Release notes for each version appear under View details on the Plugins page, read from the release itself. That link appears once a key is activated; without one, the row shows Visit plugin site instead.

A new release can take up to about 18 hours to appear. Quizpio Pro caches its update check for 6 hours, and WordPress caches its own plugin-update data for up to 12 more. If you’ve heard an update is out and don’t see it yet, that’s why — it will arrive on its own.

Automatic update notices require an activated key. Without one, you would install each new version by uploading the zip yourself.

The Pro Settings page

Everything Pro adds is switched on or off in one place: Quizpio → Pro Settings. Each feature is independent, so you can run Pro with just the parts you want.

  • Leaderboard Rank Animation — animates rank changes on the host leaderboard. See Leaderboard rank animation.
  • Lobby QR Code — shows a scannable code on the host lobby, and unlocks the full-screen join mode. Off by default. See Scan to join.
  • Streak Bonus — rewards consecutive correct answers. See Streak bonus.
  • Question Images — adds the image picker to each question in the editor. See Question and answer images.
  • AI Quiz Generation — adds the Generate button under the quiz in the editor. See Generating questions with AI.
  • Questions per Request — appears under AI Quiz Generation and controls how many questions each request to your AI provider asks for. Leave it on Automatic, which reads your server’s own time limit and picks a size that fits; lower it by hand only if generation is timing out.
  • Certificates — offers downloadable certificates on finished quizzes. See Certificates.

Below the feature switches you’ll find the certificate branding fields — logo, badge text, signature and issuer — covered under Certificate branding. Your license key is not on this page; it lives on the License screen.

Turning a feature off never destroys anything. Switch off Question Images and the picker disappears and images stop showing, but images already attached to questions stay attached — switch it back on and they return. Switch off Certificates and the buttons vanish everywhere, but your branding is kept.

Scan to join — the lobby QR code

Needs Quizpio 1.2.1 or later. On older versions of the free plugin nothing is shown and nothing breaks — the rest of Quizpio Pro is unaffected. Switch it on under Quizpio → Pro Settings → Lobby QR Code; it is off by default, because a code projected in front of a room is something you should choose rather than inherit.

With it on, a scannable code appears on the host lobby beneath the PIN, labelled Scan to join. A player points a phone camera at it and lands on the quiz page’s join screen — no typing the address, no spelling out a domain to a room.

What the code contains, and what it doesn’t

The code carries the quiz page’s address and nothing else. It does not carry the PIN. Players still enter the PIN and a nickname on the join screen exactly as before.

That is deliberate, and it is what makes the code useful beyond a single game:

  • The same code works for every session of that quiz, forever. Print it on a poster, put it in your slide deck, stick it on a table tent — it never expires.
  • A code with the PIN baked in would be session-only. It would need regenerating every game, and anyone who photographed it and scanned it later would get a dead PIN and a confusing error.
  • The address is the hard part anyway. People mistype domains far more often than they mistype six digits, and the PIN is on the screen in large type beside the code.

Making the code easier to scan

A longer web address needs a denser code — more, smaller squares in the same space — which shortens the distance it can be scanned from. If you plan to project a code to a large room, give the quiz a short slug. Quiz pages live under /live-quiz/, so /live-quiz/capitals/ scans from considerably further away than /live-quiz/staff-training-week-three-final-assessment/ — and the slug is the part you control, in the editor sidebar under Permalink. That costs nothing and helps more than any other single change.

For a large room, also use full-screen join mode, which is what the next section is for.

Nothing is sent anywhere to make the code. It is drawn in your browser from the page address, with no external QR service and no request leaving your site — the same principle as certificates.

Full-screen join mode

The code on the lobby is sized for your own screen. For a room, click ⛶ Full Screen beneath it.

The display fills with:

  • the PIN, large, as Quiz PIN: 123456;
  • the code, sized to whatever space the screen has — several times larger than the lobby version;
  • a live count of how many people have joined, so you know when to come back out;
  • the join address in plain text, for anyone who would rather not scan — and as a reassurance to people who are wary of scanning an unfamiliar code.

To leave: press Escape, click the × Back to Lobby button, or click anywhere in the white space around the content. Clicking the code or the PIN itself does not close it, so you can point at them while you talk.

You cannot start the quiz from this screen — return to the lobby first. That is why the button says what it says.

It covers everything, including the WordPress admin bar. Nothing else is on screen while it is open, which is the point when it is being projected. Your browser’s own full-screen key (F11 on Windows and Linux, Control-Command-F on a Mac) works alongside it and hides the browser’s toolbars too.

Generating questions with AI

There are two ways to generate, and one of them needs nothing at all. One-click generation runs through the AI provider your site connects under Settings → Connectors, which needs WordPress 7.0 or later. External AI Chat mode needs no provider and no particular WordPress version — the same form builds a prompt you paste into whatever AI chat you already use. Either way, Quizpio Pro stores no API keys of its own and runs no AI service.

In the block editor, a Generate questions with AI strip appears under the quiz. Click it and the Generate quiz questions dialog asks for:

  • Topic — what the quiz is about. Be specific: audience, focus and tone all shape the questions you get back.
  • Question type — Multiple choice, True / False, Mixed — multiple choice + true/false, or Poll — no scoring.
  • Questions — how many to draft.
  • Options per question — 2, 3, or 4. Hidden for true/false runs, which always have exactly two.
  • Difficulty — Easy, Medium, or Hard. Hidden for polls, where difficulty means nothing.
  • Language — start typing and pick from the suggestions, or enter any language name you like.
  • Time limit (seconds) — from 5 to 120, applied to every question in the batch.
  • Points per question — from 100 to 2000. Hidden for polls, which award none.
  • Speed Mode — asks for the whole batch in a single request instead of several smaller ones. It only appears where your server allows enough time per request, and if it runs out of time anyway, generation switches back to smaller requests and carries on rather than failing.

Mixed quizzes

Choosing Mixed adds a split: two extra fields let you say how many questions should be multiple choice and how many true/false. Enter either one and the other follows automatically — click the field you’d rather type into and it takes over. A mixed run needs at least one of each type, so the split can’t collapse to all-of-one, and the option-count field is renamed Options per multiple-choice question, since true/false questions always have exactly two.

Generated questions land in the editor as ordinary Quizpio questions. Edit them, reorder them, delete individual ones, or undo the entire batch in one step — nothing about them is special or locked. On a brand-new quiz they fill the empty starter question rather than piling up beneath it.

What Quizpio Pro checks before inserting. Questions that come back incomplete, or with two answer options that read the same, are skipped rather than dropped on you half-broken. If fewer usable questions come back than you asked for, you’re told the real number rather than left to count them.

Review before you publish. An AI drafts; it does not fact-check. Read every generated question the same way you’d read a colleague’s first draft — especially dates, numbers, and anything your audience would catch.

External AI Chat mode

If your site has no AI provider connected — or you’d simply rather use a chat you already pay for — Quizpio Pro can build the prompt and let you carry it across yourself. The questions land in the editor exactly as they would have.

With no provider available, the dialog just opens in this mode. There’s no error screen and nothing to configure first. With a provider connected, the mode is offered as a link under the form — Want to generate questions with an external AI chat instead? — and you can switch back the same way.

  1. Fill in the form exactly as you would for one-click generation: topic, type, count, difficulty, language, time limit, points.
  2. Click Copy Prompt. The prompt is built from what you just entered, and it refreshes as you change the form — if it has fallen behind, it says so rather than letting you copy something stale.
  3. Paste it into whatever AI chat you use.
  4. Copy the reply, paste it into the Reply box, and press Insert Questions. Paste and Insert Questions does both in one click when the reply is already on your clipboard.

You don’t need to tidy the reply first. Code fences, a sentence of preamble, a closing remark — Quizpio Pro finds the questions inside whatever comes back. If it genuinely can’t read the reply, it says so and leaves your text in the box so you can try again or paste a fresh one.

Nothing is sent to an AI provider from your site in this mode. The prompt is built in your browser, and the reply arrives by paste. It’s also the route to take when a connected provider is busy or refusing: a failed run offers the switch on the same screen, so you keep the form you already filled in.

Question and answer images

With Question Images on, each question in the editor gains an image picker that draws from your ordinary WordPress Media Library.

Question images

Attach an image to a question and it appears above the question text on every screen — for players and the host, during the question and at the reveal.

Answer images

You can also attach an image to individual answer options. Options with images become picture cards during the question, and appear as small thumbnails on the reveal chart, so a picture question reads clearly in both phases.

Editing images

Everything is editable directly on the question card in the editor: click an image to replace it, the × to remove it, or a dashed slot to add one.

  • Formats. Anything WordPress accepts — JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, and AVIF on WordPress 6.5+.
  • Sizes and shapes. Any. Images are centred and scaled to fit their frame, never cropped, so nothing important gets cut off. Landscape images around 16:9 sit most comfortably.
  • Performance. On screen, a right-sized copy is served rather than the full-resolution original, so players on phones aren’t downloading a 4 MB photo mid-question.

Double-point questions

Any question can be marked as worth double points in its settings in the editor. Double questions show an inline 2× badge on their editor card so you can see the shape of a quiz at a glance, and players see the same badge on the question itself.

Doubling applies to the whole scoring calculation: speed bonus and streak bonus both work from the doubled amount, not the base value. A double-point question at the end of a round is a reliable way to keep a trailing player in contention.

Streak bonus

Switch on Streak Bonus in Pro Settings and consecutive correct answers start earning more.

  • Players earn 10% more for each correct answer in a row beyond the first, up to 50% more.
  • The bonus is included in players’ points automatically — there’s nothing for the host to do mid-game.
  • The host leaderboard shows a streak badge next to anyone on a run of two or more.
  • A wrong answer or a skipped question ends the run. Polls don’t affect it — an opinion question in the middle of a round neither builds nor breaks a streak.

Leaderboard rank animation

With Leaderboard Rank Animation on, rows on the host’s leaderboard slide to their new positions when the standings change, with a soft green highlight for a climb and grey for a fall. It turns the moment after a reveal into something the room can read at a glance instead of squinting at numbers.

This applies to the host leaderboard — the one you project for the room. Turn it off to use the standard Quizpio leaderboard with no animation.

Reduced motion always wins. Anyone whose device asks for reduced motion gets the reduced-motion version automatically — rows reorder instantly with only a brief colour accent — regardless of this setting.

Certificates

With Certificates on, a finished quiz can produce a certificate for everyone who took part.

Who can download what

  • Players get a Download Certificate button on their own results screen, for their own certificate.
  • Hosts get Download Certificates on the results screen, for the whole roster.
  • Administrators get the same from any session on the Quizpio → Sessions page — including sessions played long before you installed Pro.

Ways to download

  • One at a time, from the player list in the certificates window.
  • All at once, as a .zip. Large sessions are handled in batches so the browser isn’t asked to render hundreds of certificates in one go.
  • As a print sheet, which opens a print view you can send to a printer or save as PDFs. For a large roster, the print view offers ranges so you can work through the room in manageable pages.

What’s on a certificate

Each certificate carries the player’s nickname, the quiz title, their rank and score, and the date the quiz was held — not the date you downloaded it. That’s what makes certifying an old session meaningful.

Names in any language render exactly as typed — Bengali, Arabic, Chinese — and long names shrink to fit rather than overflowing the frame.

Players are told their nickname matters

Because the nickname typed at join is the name printed on the document — and joining is the only moment it’s editable — Pro adds a short line under the nickname field on the join screen: This name appears on your certificate. It shows only while certificates are switched on.

Certificates are drawn in your browser at the moment you download them. Nothing is uploaded anywhere and nothing is stored on your server. Each one is built from the results your site already keeps, which is why a session from last year can still be certified today.

Certificate branding

Set these under Quizpio → Pro Settings, below the feature switches. They apply to every certificate your site produces.

  • Certificate Logo. Shown at the top of every certificate; the Quizpio mark is used when empty. A square image of at least 240×240 px works well, 512×512 is ideal. A PNG with a transparent background looks best — a JPG will show its own background.
  • Certificate Badge Text. The badge beneath the logo — your school, company, or event name. Long names shrink to fit. Leave it empty for QUIZPIO.
  • Certificate Signature. The name above the left signature line, in a script style. Leave it blank to sign each certificate with the quiz author automatically. Individual quizzes can override this in the quiz editor, which is useful when different people run different quizzes on one site.
  • Certificate Issuer. Shown above the right signature line, prefilled with your site title. Your homepage address is added automatically below that line. Clear this field to leave the line blank for a hand signature.

Pro troubleshooting

  • Quizpio Pro says it’s waiting for the free plugin. Pro needs Quizpio 1.1.0 or later, active. Install or update the free plugin — the setup wizard can do it for you where your permissions allow — and Pro picks up automatically.
  • No QR code on the lobby. Three things to check, in order: Lobby QR Code is on in Pro Settings (it’s off by default); the free Quizpio plugin is version 1.2.1 or later; and you’re looking at the host’s own view of the lobby, not a player’s join screen.
  • The code is hard to scan from the back of the room. Use ⛶ Full Screen — the lobby code is sized for your own screen, not for a room. If it’s still marginal, give the quiz a shorter permalink: a longer address needs a denser code, and density is what limits scanning distance.
  • Full-screen mode won’t close. Click in the white space around the content, not on the code or the PIN — clicking those is deliberately ignored so you can point at them. Escape and the × Back to Lobby button always work.
  • The Generate dialog opened in External AI Chat mode. That isn’t an error. It means no provider is available for one-click generation — either WordPress is below 7.0, or nothing is connected under Settings → Connectors. The mode works fully; connect a provider if you’d rather generate in one click.
  • Generation is slow, timing out, or coming back short. Open Recent generations on this site at the bottom of the Generate dialog — every run is recorded there with what was asked for, what came back, and what failed. Copy Diagnostics puts that on your clipboard if you need to send it to us. On a server that’s running out of time, lowering Questions per Request in Pro Settings, or leaving Speed Mode off, usually settles it.
  • The License menu item is red, or a notice says there is no valid key. No key is activated on this site yet, or the one that was has lapsed. Add or renew it under Quizpio → License. It’s a reminder about updates and support, not an interruption to a running quiz.
  • A license key was refused. The License screen names the reason: an unrecognised key, a key issued for something other than Quizpio Pro, a subscription that has lapsed, or an activation limit already used up. The key you typed stays in the field, so a typo can be corrected without retyping the whole thing. If you’ve run out of activations, free one with Deactivate This Site on the site you’re no longer using.
  • An update hasn’t shown up yet. Update checks are cached for up to about 18 hours between Quizpio Pro and WordPress itself. It will appear on its own.
  • No image picker on my questions. Check that Question Images is on in Pro Settings. If it was recently switched off, images already attached are still there and reappear when you switch it back on.
  • No certificate buttons anywhere. Check that Certificates is on in Pro Settings. The buttons appear on finished sessions, so a session that hasn’t ended yet won’t show them.
  • The leaderboard isn’t animating. Either Leaderboard Rank Animation is off, or the device is asking for reduced motion — in which case Quizpio Pro is honouring that setting deliberately, and no configuration will override it.
  • My logo looks wrong on the certificate. Use a raster image (PNG or JPG); SVG uploads are refused by design. A square PNG with a transparent background gives the cleanest result.

Uninstalling Pro

Deleting Quizpio Pro removes what Pro added — its own settings and the per-quiz certificate signature values — and leaves everything else alone. Your quizzes, sessions and results belong to the free plugin and are untouched.

You can delete Quizpio Pro whether or not the free plugin is active. If the free plugin has already been removed, Pro’s cleanup skips the parts that belong to it rather than failing.

If you’re moving your license to a different site, use Deactivate This Site on the License screen before you delete — that’s the step that frees the activation slot.

Certificates need no cleanup: nothing was ever stored on your server to remove.
